Layers – Chapter 1 Page 8

As she drove through the streets of lower Manhattan, she turned off the sound system.
“Is anything coming back to you? Any memories of last night?”, Paula asked.
“No. I still can’t remember anything beyond what I’ve already told you”, Greg replied.
“Aren’t you curious about what you revealed of your past to me?”
“I don’t really even want to think about it”.
“Do you remember making love to me last night?”, Paula continued.
“Not last night. Only the morning”.
They drove silently for a few minutes as they approached the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel.
“Do you trust me, Greg?”, Paula asked, as she turned on the headlights and entered the mouth of the dimly lit underground passageway.
Greg did not answer straight away. But he had already, unconsciously, decided upon his approach to his budding relationship with Paula.
“I don’t know. That’s the God’s honest truth.”
Paula smiled. She liked his response.
“You know most men would have automatically said yes, just to get into my pants again”.
Greg glanced over at her profile, as she stared straight ahead.
“You know, we are very much alike in a lot of ways”.
“Yeah? How’s that?”, Greg asked.
“We’ve both been conditioned not to trust anyone”.
Now it began to sink in to Greg how much of his past he must have revealed to Paula last night. It pained him more than a little.
“You are a gift. A gift from heaven, sweetheart”, Paula added, as she stroked his thigh for a brief moment.
Still staring straight ahead as they neared the tunnel’s exit, Paula commented, “My father passed away just a few months ago”.
Greg was more than a little taken aback by this statement.
“I’m very sorry to hear that”, Greg replied.
There was a pause in their conversation for a brief while as they exited the dark tunnel and entered the light of day.
“I’m curious, Paula, how come you mentioned your father’s death to me?”
“He was the only person in the world that I could completely trust”, she answered.
After a short pause, she continued.
“I wanted you to know that I have no one. Nobody that I can confide in anymore. When you told me your life story last night, although we have lived very different lives, I totally empathized with you.” She gave Greg some time to digest her words, and continued.
“I’m telling you you’re life is in serious danger, and I want to help. There are going to be times when you might question the motives behind the actions I’m going to have to take. You don’t trust anybody, and I’m not an easy person to trust. I want to try and help you understand where I’m coming from”.
As they drove through the streets of Brooklyn headed towards Brighton Beach, Greg tried desperately to recall the events of the previous night. But try as he might, his memory continued to fail him.
