Heartfelt Words

“So what!”
“So what? You can’t go around making up stories about me”.
“When did I ever do that?”.
“I can’t believe what I’m hearing. The story you told Barry today. It was a total fabrication. I think you’re delusional”.
“It could have happened”.
“You are really crazy. I think you should go”.
“What is it about the story I told him that bothers you?”
“It’s a lie, sicko. It never happened. That’s what bothers me. I really think it’s time for you to leave”.
“You like Barry, right?”
“What has that have to do with anything?”
“I was just trying to help you out”.
“By telling him I had a twin sister that was murdered?”
“Yeah. I thought it would make him feel sorry for you”.
“And that would make me more attractive in his eyes?”
“You don’t know much about men, do you?”
Sarah had known Owen since High School. They were on and off friends for the past ten years or so. During the last few months, through a series of coincidences, they landed within the others circle of friends, and now saw each other on a near daily basis.
Sarah had known there wasn’t something quite right about Owen for some time. But she had always looked at his off centered nature as a harmless quirk of character. Her judgement of him was beginning to change.
“Did you ever have a crush on me?”, Owen asked out of nowhere.
“No, Owen, I never did. I really think it’s time for you to go”.
“It’s ten o’clock on a weeknight. You’re not going anywhere but to sleep tonight. What’s the rush?”
Owen, who was sitting at the far end of Sarah’s sofa, got up and sat himself down right next to her.
“What are you doing, Owen?”
“I couldn’t hear you so well from over there”.
“There’s no need for you to hear me. This conversation is over and you have to leave”.
“Do you think you know me very well, Sarah?”
“Okay, now you’re really starting to scare me”, Sarah said, and she got up from the couch.
“Scare you? Why would you say that? I’ve always had very warm, strong feelings for you, Sarah. Everything I do is just to see you happy. Don’t you know that?”
Sarah was a little confused now. She wasn’t quite sure how to react towards Owen’s last statement.
“Please, sit back down, Sarah. Please”.
Sarah found herself sitting back down on the sofa, and when Owen put his arm around her and began to kiss her, she did not offer even an iota of resistance.
