Clueless

It’s been a good day. I was made a partner in my law firm, Kelly & Mcgovern Inc. Sitting in my seat on the long train ride home that night, I couldn’t wait to tell my wife and children, if they were still up, the good news. I could have called, but then I wouldn’t have been able to see their faces light up. My family knew how hard I had worked for and how much I desired this promotion.
But mostly, I was thinking about how this news would exonerate me of Adele’s suspicions. We had hardly seen each other over the past year. I had taken to going into the office even on weekends. Although there was much trust between us over the many years of dating and then marriage, Adele couldn’t help but wonder if it wasn’t just my work that kept me away from her for such long stretches of time. And whereas previously we had a pretty active sex life, it was at present all but non existent. Well, I thought, this news should put all of her doubts to rest.
After what seemed like an eternity, the train finally pulled into my station. It was not difficult locating my car in the near empty parking lot. Though usually a pretty defensive driver, I sped home that night, even ignoring a just turned red traffic light. As I pulled the car into my driveway and remotely opened the garage door, my anticipation grew to a feverish pitch. Although I could have entered the house through the garage, I chose to walk outside and ring the bell of my front door. Adele took her sweet time answering it. When she finally opened it, the sarcasm in her greeting was unmistakable. “Home so early? Must have been a pretty easy case”. In her nightgown, she turned her back to me and headed back up the stairs.
Although having had many a sleepless night over the past year, and a very active mother of three, Adele, now thirty two, was still quite easy on the eyes. She had kept her girlish figure through her vigorous workout schedule. Her face seemed to grow into her very curly auburn hair, whereas in her youth it gave her somewhat of an awkward appearance. Truth be told, she was even more desirable at present than when we had first married.

Honey, I have some great news to tell you”, I said.
As if she hadn’t heard me, she continued her ascent up the stairway. In my overcoat and briefcase still in hand, I chased her up thestairs. Overtaking her in the hallway and standing directly in front of her, she stood still and looked me in the eyes.
“I was made a partner today, Adele. Not only that, but from now on, it’s ‘Kelly, McGovern and Thomas’. You see, all that hard work paid off. It’s time for us to celebrate”. With those words, Adele feigned a smile, and proceeded to walk by me and into our bedroom.
I followed her in, took off my overcoat and put down my briefcase. She went to bed, pulling the covers up to her neck and turning her body sideways as not to be facing me. I quickly undressed, snuggled up beside her in bed, gingerly swept aside her hair, and gently kissed the nape of her neck.
“Come on, sweetie, don’t be like that. I did it all for you and the kids. I know I haven’t been around for a while. But it paid off, and things are going to be different now. Everything is going to change for the better”. With those words, she turned her body around towards me, staring hard and steadfast into my eyes.
“Do you take me for a fool, Jimmy?”. She kept her gaze for a short while, then got out of bed and disappeared into our walk-in closet.
When she finally reappeared, she handed me an envelope containing pictures taken by the private investigator she had hired some months ago.
